Your body is capable of doing many things, but it can’t make or store vitamin C, which helps in the development and maintenance of your bones, cartilage, teeth, and gums, and also helps in connective tissue formation, wound healing, and maintaining immune function. Available in Sustained Release and Chewable formulas, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against damaging free radicals.

Vita C – The Swiss Army Knife Of The Nutrition World

Is it time to take a second look at the current research on the overlooked value of vitamin C?

Shaklee Vita C Is Unique

In 1978 Dr. Shaklee was asked by the field to produce a vitamin c supplement following on the popularity of  the book by Drs. Linus Pauling  and Ewan Cameron.  This explains in plain language the nature and known causes of cancer. It also weighs the value and limitations of various modes of treatment: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormones, immunotherapy, and a number of unorthodox ones. The value of vitamin C as an adjunct dietary therapy is corroborated by detailed accounts of cancer patients who have derived varying degrees of benefit from vitamin C treatment.  Dr. Shaklee’s reply was, “Only if we can make one better than what is currently out there.”  Under the direction of Dr. James Scala, then the Vice President of Science and Technology, the worlds first sustained release water soluble vitamin C was developed.  Dr. Scala described to me how a computer generated shape for the tablet was designed to dissolve and release 100 mg (the equivalent of 1 1/2 oranges) every hour for 5 hours.

Signs and Symptoms of Vitamin C Deficiency

In the U.S., clinical scurvy is rare; however many people do have low levels of vitamin C. If you’re elderly, for instance, you may have higher requirements for vitamin C, as aging may inhibit absorption. Smokers or those around smokers may also require more vitamin C due to the increased oxidative stress from cigarette smoke. Most often however, subclinical deficiencies for vitamin C go undetected and given some other name.  Signs that you may need more vitamin C include:

Dry and splitting hair, nosebleeds or Red spots on the skin Decreased wound-healing rate Bleeding gums

Rough, dry or scaly skin Gingivitis (inflammation of your gums)Decreased ability to ward off infection Easy bruising

What’s the Best Way to Optimize Your Vitamin C?

The ideal way to optimize your vitamin C stores is by eating 5 pounds of a wide variety of fresh whole organic locally grown foods, primarily vegetables and fruits every day!  I believe, with the naturopathic perspective, that in order to be truly effective, ascorbic acid alone is not enough. They believe it’s the synergistic action of the ascorbic acid in combination with its associated micronutrients, such as bioflavonoids and other components that produce the full range of benefits.

This is why I recommend the Vitalized Immunity for those which a challenged immune system (low white blood count and/ or low globulin protein).

Eating a colorful diet (i.e. plenty of vegetables) helps ensure you’re naturally getting the phytonutrient synergism needed. One of the easiest ways to ensure you’re getting enough vegetables in your diet is by juicing them or using your VitaMix blender and getting a green smoothie with added Shaklee Soy Protein. You can also squeeze some fresh lemon or lime juice into some water with your Vitalizing Immunity tablet.  It really boosts your blood and saliva level of vitamin C.

I Let This Slip

I am sorry to say that I forgot the overall benefits of this humble hero of the nutritional family.  Since vitamin C is more than just ascorbic acid (it actually is found with 9 related compounds) and is water soluble we must get enough of a natural form every day.  Dr. Pauling recommended from 1,000 to 10, 000 mg of the ascorbate form of the vitamin daily for adults.  More recently, Dr. Robert Cathcart uses huge amounts of vitamin C for treating advanced infectious illnesses.  Most experts like Dr. Cathcart, now recommend incorporating high-dose intravenous vitamin C (IV/C) infusions to achieve the higher blood concentrations necessary to suppress  many tumor cells. I find that from 500 to 5,000 mg per day is sufficient to keep blood and saliva levels in an acceptable range for otherwise healthy individuals.  I personally take 5,000 mg per day.

New Research on Cancer

While Dr. Pauling met heavy medical criticism of his theory about vitamin C and cancer, most recent research has shown exciting evidence that Dr. Pauling was right

Recently, exciting research has been published that documents the ability of vitamins C, E and selenium orally to prevent most cancers, and to decrease the mortality of pancreatic cancers, stomach cancers, prostate cancers and other cancers. It sounds too good to be true. The research on the combined use of select chemotherapy along with with vitamin C  shows remarkable benefits of combining the nutrient with the drug.

Almost all vitamin C experts agree, hydrogen peroxide produced by high levels of ascorbate (vitamin C) can work with low doses of chemotherapy to kill cancer cells. Dr. Jeanne Drisko, U of Kansas, Dept. of Integrative Medicine

However, vitamin C by itself is relatively weak at this job so don’t try low dosages. Experts recommend continuous high dosages of ascorbate (vitamin C) combined with specific adjuncts (e.g.Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin D3,Vitamin K3, and/or D’Fraction Maitake and Reishi Mushroom to name a few.)
