A Story About a Drug Given to Pregnant Women in The 50s and 60s

Her mother took this woman under her wing and became friends with Joy and she already had a son.  Joy would come over for afternoon tea and her mother loved baking and having an apple tree in the garden. she would make apple and they'd chat and her mum  always the joker making her laugh and feel special because she would make a fuse over her. A horrible thing happened to Joy this man took advantage of her and she got pregnant this is a sad story. Her son was born deformed a horrible birth defect. Why did this happen?
